Most of Unwritten’s hair products do not contain silicones, in fact only one product contains silicones, So Sublime Hydro Repair Serum.
While at Unwritten we strive to produce performance haircare formulations without silicones, we opted for a mix of three in So Sublime to give the formulation maximum performance. Part of this performance was to be able to use So Sublime on dry hair OR damp hair prior to heat styling. The ingredient mix we use below provides heat protection up to around 230 degrees Celsius. This is the temperature at which the silicones start to break down and lose their protective properties.
A little about the four key ingredients that together work to provide this protection as well as conditioning affect is below:
- Dimethicone is a water-soluble silicone that forms a protective barrier on the hair shaft. This barrier helps to prevent the heat from styling tools from damaging the hair.
- PEG/PPG-18/18 Dimethicone is a water soluble silicone that helps to add shine and moisture to the hair. This helps to protect the hair from the heat of styling tools and makes it look healthier.
- Disodium PEG-12 Dimethicone Sulfosuccinate is a water-soluble silicone that helps to condition the hair. This helps to make the hair more manageable and helps to prevent frizz.
- A recent study published in the journal Journal of Cosmetic Science found that dimethicone can help to protect hair from heat damage. The study found that hair treated with dimethicone before being exposed to heat styling tools was less damaged than hair that was not treated with dimethicone.
All three of our styling products, So Sublime, Oh High! and Hey Genie! contain non silicone based heat protection ingredients but are equally effective protection for heat styling.
